Local charity that acts as a resource centre for homeless and disadvantaged people in the Stockport area.
The Weekend Day Centre provides an informal weekend and bank holiday care facility for people with a formal diagnosis of dementia and their carers within the Stockport borough, including Marple.
We are open every weekend and bank holiday throughout the year (except Christmas Day). The Centre provides day care for up to 40 clients each day; carers are welcome to attend, or to have a break at home for the day. The centre started in Stockport in December 1991 and achieved charity status in 1993. In 1999 we gained national recognition by being awarded first place in the Carers Scheme category at the Social Care Awards, the first year that these awards were presented. The prevalence of dementia increases with age. It is currently estimated that there are 3,800 people in Stockport with dementia and it is assumed that if prevalence rates remain the same and the population changes as expected there will be an additional 1,270 people living with dementia by 2025 (Source: Stockport Dementia Strategy). We offer a wide range of activities to suit all tastes and abilities for people who live with a dementia. Activities include crafts, quizzes, bingo, games and gardening. The Centre provides external entertainment every afternoon from singers and dancers to choirs and comedians. The Centre celebrates all personal, national and important events including birthdays, anniversaries, mothers’ day and Valentine’s day. Our mornings are spent doing lots of activities, or just sitting quietly if that is preferred – whatever our clients feel like doing. We take care of any personal care needs as and when required. And we provide breakfast, a 3 course lunch and an afternoon tea. The Devonshire Centre is 19-bedded neuro-rehabilitation unit for the residents of Stockport and the surrounding areas for patients who have suffered serious head injuries or who suffer from chronic neurological illnesses. The building was specifically designed for the provision of inpatient care for patients requiring neuro-rehabilitation and a majority of the accommodation is provided in single rooms. The Devonshire Centre contains a purposely built therapy room and a gymnasium for physiotherapy.
We hope to be able to send our patients home rehabilitated and to live their lives as independently as possible. This can require a stay at the Devonshire Centre that exceeds the duration of a typical hospital stay; with this in mind, we try to make the environment as friendly as possible with activities including film night and take-away night. The team at the Devonshire Centre includes consultants in rehabilitation medicine, junior medical staff, nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and a psychologist experienced in the field of neuro-rehabilitation. Between us, we try to ensure that all aspects of rehabilitation are provided as required to ensure as full a recovery as possible.
